They develop an upright, compact habit with a high tolerance to summer heat. The deep purple foliage colour is consistent during the spring and summer, changing to a maroon or reddish-bronze colour in autumn.
Heat tolerance is the distinguishing characteristic of this Acer truncatum cultivar. Its foliage resembles that of a 'Crimson King' maple. A cross between Acer truncatum and Acer platanoides. 'Crimson Sunset' adapts to most soils but grows best in slightly acidic soil conditions. Avoid pruning in late winter and early spring.
